How resident and aspiring author Anna Marie Schwager turned everyday experiences into poetry
When Anna Marie Schwager moved into South Hills Square Retirement Community six years ago as one of its very first residents, she was looking for a place to call home.
What she found was something even more meaningful: inspiration.
Today, at 91 years old, Anna Marie is preparing to publish her first book of poetry, Treasured Moments, Vol. 1, while already working on a second collection. It's an accomplishment she is especially proud of because she is legally blind.
"I discovered I had a natural gift for writing through a writing class a couple of years ago," Anna Marie said. "I write what I feel, and most of my poetry is about the residents and my experiences living at South Hills Square."
As a Charter Member, Anna Marie has watched South Hills Square grow from its earliest days into the vibrant community it is today.
One of her poems, Home Sweet Home, captures many of the things she appreciates most about life at South Hills Square, from chef-prepared meals and weekly housekeeping to activities, transportation, and the friendships she has built along the way.
While she says she enjoys nearly everything about living in the community, a few favorites stand out.
"I especially like that I don't have to do dishes," she said with a smile. "I love yoga and exercise."
For Anna Marie, the title of her poem says it all.
When asked what "Home Sweet Home" means to her, her answer was simple:
"I'm home."
She also appreciates the convenience of having a washer and dryer in her apartment and the community's location. Most importantly, she values the people around her.
"Both the staff and residents are very nice, and they have inspired my poetry," she said.
That inspiration is woven throughout Home Sweet Home, a poem that reflects her gratitude for the lifestyle, friendships, and support she has found at South Hills Square.
As for anyone considering a visit?
"I encourage it."
With a growing collection of poetry, a book soon to be published, and countless treasured moments still ahead, Anna Marie continues to prove that creativity, passion, and new accomplishments have no age limit.
Home Sweet Home

If you are looking for a home to retire,
RLC South Hills Square surely is a home of desire.
I've never been so spoiled.
Through most of my life, I toiled.
They cook my meals;
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are ideal.
No dishes to wash,
With snacks and ice cream, oh my gosh!
Whenever you desire
Or require,
You have light housekeeping once a week.
The housekeepers are unique.
There are games galore
To keep your mind sharp and more.
We have an exercise room to keep you moving,
With an Activities Director helping and improving
Our physical and mental capability,
Using them with sensibility.
The concierges are terrific,
Always helping and specific.
The managers are welcoming and sweet;
Getting to know them is a treat.
There is a store and beauty shop on site,
And therapists to help keep you upright.
All in all, a family are we,
And all the help is great to a T.
I have been here since South Hills Square opened its door,
And I am truly satisfied, I implore.
Oh yes, there is a bus
To take us
To doctor appointments on certain days,
To weekly outings and displays.
Of course, shopping for food,
And trips to Walmart are included, too.
One of the things I like best
Is having a washer and dryer in my apartment.
So come and check us out.
Seeing is believing, without a doubt.
You may find even more things that you like,
Making your home feel warm and lifelike.
Living here, you can be independent,
Especially with such caring attendants.
